NAMTECH (New Age Makers Institute of Technology) and Micron Technology signed a MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) in January 2024 to develop a skilled talent pool of smart manufacturing professionals for Industry 4.0 and beyond. This academic-corporate collaboration is a part of the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
The collaboration aims to:
- Upgrade and enhance academic resources through strategic and progressive curriculum development, hands-on learning and faculty training.
- Opportunities for NAMTECH students, including Industry 4.0 training, placements, internships, and academic excursions to industrial areas.
- Develop industry-grade labs for semiconductor assembly and testing
- Hygienic learning environment at campus, hostel, classrooms etc
- An incubation hub to support this industry-academia collaboration
Core Purpose of the Collaboration
Micron inked the academic MOU with NAMTECH during the Vibrant Gujarat Summit to hire trained professionals for its assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat. The facility will generate around 5,000 direct and 15,000 community jobs in the near future. NAMTECH will help as a staffing source of trained manufacturing professionals for Micron.
This collaboration will create a steady pipeline for domestic industry and help India compete in the evolving global manufacturing landscape, integrated with Industry 4.0 technologies.
The partnership will provide training programs and experiential education, focusing on cultivating a globally competitive pool of professionals with diverse and sustainable engineering career paths. It is aligned with the Indian Semiconductor Mission’s objective to develop a robust, self-sufficient semiconductor assembly and test ecosystem that will help India emerge as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design.
Bytes of Key Stakeholders from NAMTECH, Micron and the Government
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw (Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics, and IT) said, “We are shaping the future of semiconductor education and manufacturing in India while sculpting a global narrative of innovation and technological prowess. This collaboration will help us propel towards a self-sufficient and pioneering role in the semiconductor landscape.” He also requested Micron to establish a Center for Excellence in Gujarat.
Gursharan Singh (Senior Vice President- Global Supply and Test Operations at Micron) said, “This synergistic partnership with NAMTECH is an opportunity to build the talent and skills necessary for the semiconductor assembly and test industry. The collaboration enables us to leverage India’s well-established talent pipeline for the semiconductor ecosystem, not just regionally but also on a global scale.”
Sanjay Sharma (Board Member at NAMTECH and Vice President of ArcelorMittal) said, “The partnership with Micron heralds a new chapter for NAMTECH, an establishment created by, for, and with industry. NAMTECH’s deep focus on experiential learning, coupled with Micron’s pre-eminence in semiconductor technologies, will cultivate skilled specialists adept at navigating the intricacies of a rapidly evolving sector that will continue to rise in the Indian subcontinent and beyond.”
Micron-NAMTECH Role in Bridging the Skill Gap
Amar Shetye, Global Operations Head at Resource Management Group of TCS, said in an interview with Times of India recently that “TCS is struggling to fill around 80,000 vacant positions due to a skill gap, causing them to depend upon contractors to fill these roles.”
Krishna Vij, Business Head of IT Staffing at TeamLease, said, “Around 3 to 5% of freshers hired by top IT companies in 2022 are still awaiting onboarding. The reasons are project visibility issues in North American and European markets, job readiness and skill deficiency according to the evolving tech world.”
The skill gap is a reality, and it requires strategic collaboration between the government, academia, and companies to prepare India for the future of smart manufacturing by enhancing the BTech Computer Science scope and other engineering disciplines.
The collaboration of NAMTECH and Micron can help to bridge this skill gap significantly with smart manufacturing programs, industry 4.0 training, internships and more. More importantly, the industry-academia partnership will help students explore BTech scope in Industry 4.0, intensively tech-integrated.
Let us briefly introduce NAMTECH and Micron to help you understand this promising academic-corporate collaboration, which will advance the future of smart manufacturing and expand the BTech Computer Science scope beyond traditional job roles.
