Mechanical Engineering Course of Study

To earn the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MSME) degree, students must complete 30 credit hours, with thesis or non-thesis option, with a minimum cumulative graduate grade point average of 3.0 for the courses listed in the Plan of Study.

Note: PNW will accept 12 credits from NAMTECH’s iPMP in Smart Manufacturing Program. These credits will be added to the student's PNW transcript. NAMTECH students will then need to complete the remaining 18 credits on campus during their second year of study at PNW to earn their MSME degree.

Course Requirements

One advanced mathematics course (3 credit hours) at the 500-level taught by either the mathematics department or one of the engineering departments is required for both thesis and non-thesis options.
  • Non-Thesis Option Non-thesis students focus on primary mechanical engineering courses with supplemental courses in mathematics, engineering, statistics or various other courses.
  • Thesis Option Thesis option allows a student to earn credit for conducting independent research leading to a publishable report or thesis. This option requires 21 credit hours of advanced ME/mathematics coursework and a minimum of 9 credit hours of thesis research work.
  • The thesis research is undertaken and completed under the supervision of a graduate faculty member and the thesis committee. The student’s thesis committee is responsible for approving the research plan, monitoring progress and re-viewing the thesis prior to acceptance.

Note: NAMTECH student can pursue the Thesis Option under the pathway program at Purdue University Northwest. However, the Thesis Option requires a minimum of three semesters on PNW campus, which may result in additional financial costs for NAMTECH students.
